Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

Sunday, February 5, 2012 was Race #4 of the Charlotte Winter Short Track Mountain Bike Series. It rained all day Saturday so all the racers were expecting a wet/muddy course. But once again, that wasn’t the case. The course was in great shape and lap times were consistent with the previous weeks.

I was feeling pretty good after riding Brushy Mtn. 3 times on Friday with Mike L. During my warm-up my legs felt pretty good and the temperature was perfect for racing. I even took my leg warmers off.

I started the race in the front row and got a good start and went into the woods in about 3 or 4th place. The first lap was uneventful and coming out of the woods on the first lap, TJ hit the gas hard and I jumped on Steve Fish’s wheel. I think we stayed in this position for a couple laps with TJ hitting it hard out of the woods. Five us up ended up off the the front, Steve, Me, TJ, Andy Good and Todd.

Steve went to the front after about 5 laps and put the hammer down. Andy and Todd couldn’t hold the pace so now it was down to Steve, TJ and me. I was in 2nd place behind Steve for the next 5 laps. On one hand I was glad to be hanging on because in the past couple races, Steve and TJ were dropping me on the gravel road. But on the other hand I was suffering bigtime.

I wanted to get into the woods first after about 10 laps but just couldn’t get by Steve. So I decided to try to save some energy for the finish. The only problem with my theory was that Steve kept driving the pace harder and harder. I was 2nd coming out of the woods on the last lap and thought I had a chance until Steve surged again. I blew up and told TJ he had to go.

I finished in 3rd place about 15 seconds behind Steve and TJ. Once again, they had a sprint finish. I hope to be closer next week!

The SS race went as usual. I had a nice easy start and moved up to 9th place and raced most of the race by myself. I was only lapped by one person so I’m definitely improving.

One more race to go! The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team is leading the team competition and should be able to win that category.

Sunday morning started much like Saturday, early.  Neal and I left the house right at 5:30AM to get to the criterium course held in Hampton Park next to the Citadel in Charleston, SC.  We stopped, got coffee and headed down I17.  There was a full moon and it seemed like we were going to drive right up to.  One of the coolest moon sets I’ve seen.

We managed to get the Start/Finish Truss and stage set up in record time.  The SC Criterium Championship is held on a flat course with two real turns.  It’s a super fast 1 mile course.

  • Race 1 – 2012 Charlotte Speedway Time Trial Series – OUCH!!

Holy Cow,  Wednesday, April 11 was the first race of the Charlotte Speedway Time Trial Series and one word describes the TT – OUCH.

Sarah and I left the shop around 4 to get to the race and like always, one thing led to another, we had to pick up something we forgot (wheel and timing chip), put gas in the van (as always), school traffic and managed to get to the track around 5 and lost our customary spot near registration and ended up on the backside of the garage.

  • 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships – Day 1

Chester and I left the Cool Breeze Cyclery at 3PM and headed to Augusta for the 2012 Paralympic Road Nationals.  We made it to Augusta in 3 hours and checked into the Sheraton.

Chester asked me a couple months ago to pilot his tandem at Nationals but I don’t think I really understood how big a deal it is.  It started to sink in when we rolled through the hotel parking lot and there was a line of about 100 cyclists with their time trial bikes.  They were in line to get their bikes inspected by USA Cycling!

  • Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series

The first official race of the Charlotte Summer Series Mountain Bike Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling was at North Mecklenburg Park.  I took the Cool Breeze Van down N. Meck and set the tent up.  With this being the first race and at a relatively easy course, the numbers were impressive.  I’m betting Neal had over 150 racers.  The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team had 12 racers!  A great turn out!

I decided to race the Super Sport class for the summer series.  I considered the Expert class but don’t have a USAC expert license so I couldn’t sign up for the extra length required of the expert class.   We had 12 racers in the Super Sport class which is a great turnout for this class.

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

It’s been a long season so far. I don’t know if I’m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I don’t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two things….people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I can’t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that I’ve been doing the TT.
