Race 1 – 2012 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

Sunday was the first race of the Charlotte Winter Short Track Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling.  Everyone was fearing cold weather but somehow Neal ordered a beautiful January day.

My race was at 12 but I arrived early to set up the Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store Team tent with Sarah.  My first mountain bike race of the day was the Sport 40+ class.  I lined up on the 2nd row feeling confident that I could get a good start.  I was joking with my buddy Wayne when the race started.  I usually don’t have a problem getting clicked in but missed my pedal but managed to keep my momentum and eventually get clicked in before the first turn.

I entered the turn 1 and used some of my road racing experience to pass 4 or 5 guys.  I took a small risk and entered the woods in about 5th place.  The first lap was uneventful and I did my best to keep my heart rate under control.

I don’t remember if it was the first or 2nd lap, but coming through the start/finish line, I felt pretty good and attacked.  It was too early, but I was thinking that I’d catch some lapped traffic and be able to get some time on the group.  TJ from Giordana followed me and we managed to pull a good lead.  TJ took the lead from there and I did everything I could to keep up with him.

TJ was super strong and was pulling away from me on the gravel road when we exited the woods.  I managed to stay with him for 4 or 5 laps.  He’d drop me and then I’d catch him in the woods.  With 3 laps to go, he put in a big surge on the gravel road and I was toast. I did my best to hang on.

I could see a group of 3 or 4 riders chasing at the turnaround (turn 1).  But thankfully I managed to hold them off for 2nd place in the race.  It was a good wake-up call – the first race always is.

My second mountain bike race of the day was the Single Speed race about  an hour after my first race.  I was racing for fitness and started pretty easy.  The SS was pretty uneventful minus my legs giving out on me on the last 3 laps coming out of the woods.  I was passed by 4 of the SS riders, Justin, Jason and Bruce to name 3.  These guys are super fast, I’m not sure how they go so fast on their SSs.  I was also passed by two expert women.  I later heard one was 19.  Pretty impressive and it is a good example of how fast the women are getting.

So, 1 week down, 4 to go.  2nd in my first race and 10th in my second.

Yesterday was the last race of the Charlotte Winter Short Track Series.  5 straight weekends of mountain bike racing with basically one trainer ride a week (on Tuesdays).  Once again, I was hoping for a good day on the bike after a long day of officiating the day before. On Saturady, I officiated 3 Division II lacrosse games and woke up on Sunday pretty sore because I don’t run much anymore – well never run anymore.

  • What is Keirin Racing

A keirin race is a mass-start race with 6-9[citation needed] sprinters riders and a paced start. Riders draw lots to determine starting positions and start as the pacer (usually a motorcycle, a derny, or a tandem bicycle) approaches. The riders are required to remain behind the pacer, which starts at the deliberately slow speed of about 25 km/h, gradually increases in speed and leaves the track approximately 600–700 meters before the end, at a speed of about 50 km/h. The first cyclist to finish the race is the winner (sometimes finishing at 70 km/h). Keirin races are about 2 kilometers in length (eight laps on a 250m track, six laps on a 333m track, and five laps on a 400m track).

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

It’s been a long season so far. I don’t know if I’m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I don’t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two things….people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I can’t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that I’ve been doing the TT.

  • Leadville 100 Race Report by Mark Odendahl

The LT100 is a 100+ mile long (more on that in a minute) bike race that starts at an altitude of 10,200 ft above sea level in downtown Leadville and travels out into the Rockies and up to 12,544 ft. There are more than 14,000 feet of total elevation gain on a course that is about 80% rough fire road/double track, 18% pavement and 2% singletrack. It has 3 huge climbs and about a dozen smaller ones. Entry is by lottery – 1500 get in and reportedly over 10,000 entered the lottery to try after last year’s movie. What makes it special is that the entire field starts at once on the out and back course – Tour de France pros and amateurs alike all race together.

  • Race 2 – 2011 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

This past Sunday was the second race of the Charlotte Mountain Bike Winter Series. I was hoping for a better result than I had the  previous weekend. The weather was colder but it was dry (finally) all week. I got to the course around 10 to watch Lexi (Jasen Taylor’s  little girl) while he raced. Watching them race got me a little excited to get going and the good news is that the riders were staying  dry and mud free.
