2012 6 Hours of Warrior Creek

I attended the 6 Hours of Warrior Creek with the Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store Team.  I was a last minute addition to Layla’s team.  She was at the Charlotte Youth Cycling League races and asked if I wanted to be part of a duo team.

I met up with Layla, Martin, Franci, Dave, Rob and George in the Cool Breeze Cyclery parking lot and we hit the road at 7.  The Race Director reserved us a spot right at the Start/Finish.  Frank and Jon were there when we arrived and we set up our Pit.  We put up both shop tents, a table, some chairs and one bike rack and were ready to roll.

It was decided – or I decided – that Layla could take the first lap.  I was thinking the course was going to be muddy after all the rain we received the previous week and I used the excuse that Layla had registered the team so she got to go first by default.  The mountain bike race started promptly at 10.  The first lap had about two extra miles of campground roads before the riders hit the trail.  Layla had a strong first lap.

I started my lap and realized real fast that the trail was crazy fast.  I overshot several of my first turns until I adjusted to the trail.  Warrior Creek is a great trail.  It’s nothing but up and down, turn after turn.  There aren’t any sections where you can settle in and just ride.  I was having a great time and had plenty of ‘rabbits’ to keep me motivated.  I checked my heart rate only to realize I was racing.  I’m pretty sure my HR was about 165 for the whole lap.

I saw Dave on the towards the end of my first lap.  I caught him and a group of about 7 guys right before one of the climbs. They were kind enough to let me by one by one.  I worked my way up by passing on the inside of the switchbacks and the guys were more than happy to let me by.

After that, it was full gas  to the finish line.  Total time for the first lap was approx 1:01 for 12.66 miles.

Layla had a much stronger 2nd lap and was back to the pits.  The crazy part was about 10 minutes before I headed up to the pits, I just happened to check my front tire’s pressure and it was half full of air.  I run tubeless tires and was able to determine that I had a small hole in the sidewall.  Unfortunately, the Stan’s wasn’t sealing the hole so I had to put a tube in the tire.  Nothing like a flat to take your mind of the next lap.

I hit the trail again and was off.  Because the race had been going on for about 4 hours at this point, I had long stretches of trail that were just to myself.  I was just rolling having a blast.  But i could tell that going hard was taking it’s toll on my legs.  They started burning on the small steep climbs.  And of course, at about mile 4 I went to grab some water only to learn that I had lost my water bottle.  No problem, I knew Jasen and Franci had started in front of me and I hoped to catch one of them to get some water.

The only problem with this theory is that they were running great.  I managed to catch Franci after mile 8 and she gave me one of her bottles which saved me.  The rest of the lap was just pure fun.  I was catching solo riders and was so glad I was racing on a duo team.  I couldn’t imagine racing Warrior Creek Solo.

Everyone finished up and had a great time, although they looked very tired.  Layla and I finished 6th in the Duo Coed class.  There were no major injuries or crashes, just some trashed tires and tubes.

The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team had great representation at the race and I’m sure we are all looking forward to next year!

The 2012 Dillworth Criterium was my first road race of the year.   Dillworth isn’t one of my favorite courses.  I find it to be a challenging course with a long, steady climb on the front stretch, plus it’s usually the my first road race of the year so my body isn’t used to the effort required in a criterium.

My race started at 2.  I arrived a little early to catch the end of the Cat 4/5 race to see my friend Mike Levine finish up.  After that, I rode my bike around for about 20 minutes to get the legs going.

  • Leadville 100 Race Report by Mark Odendahl

The LT100 is a 100+ mile long (more on that in a minute) bike race that starts at an altitude of 10,200 ft above sea level in downtown Leadville and travels out into the Rockies and up to 12,544 ft. There are more than 14,000 feet of total elevation gain on a course that is about 80% rough fire road/double track, 18% pavement and 2% singletrack. It has 3 huge climbs and about a dozen smaller ones. Entry is by lottery – 1500 get in and reportedly over 10,000 entered the lottery to try after last year’s movie. What makes it special is that the entire field starts at once on the out and back course – Tour de France pros and amateurs alike all race together.

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

It’s been a long season so far. I don’t know if I’m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I don’t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two things….people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I can’t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that I’ve been doing the TT.

  • Race 3 – 2012 Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series

My second race of the Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series was at Renaissance Park in Charlotte, NC.  The course at Renni is a lot different from N. Meck.  It’s longer and more technical, a lot more technical.  It also uses most of the Winter Short Track Series Short Track Course.

Andy and I took the Cool Breeze Cyclery van down to the race.  It was hot and we decided a warm up wasn’t necessary!

  • 24HR Burn Challenge in Wilkesboro, NC 2009

Another 24HR Burn Challenge in Wilkesboro, NC has come and gone. We (mostly Mike) put together a team consisting of me, Mike Levine, Ashley Drum, Jasen Taylor and Shannon St. Claire (Brushy Mountain Bicycles). John from Cool Breeze Cyclery was our mechanic. Mike rented a sweet RV fifth wheel for us to set up camp – or really so that he could have A/C and a shower. (Which Ashley made the most use of all weekend). Mike went up on Friday night to reserve our spot and set up camp. We definitely had the best spot as we were overlooking the lake and trees on the opposite side of the lake – and got to watch every racer finish his/her lap. Fortunately he was in the RV when the big storm hit on Friday night that would have an effect on the rest of the weekend.

  • Race 2 – 2011 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

This past Sunday was the second race of the Charlotte Mountain Bike Winter Series. I was hoping for a better result than I had the  previous weekend. The weather was colder but it was dry (finally) all week. I got to the course around 10 to watch Lexi (Jasen Taylor’s  little girl) while he raced. Watching them race got me a little excited to get going and the good news is that the riders were staying  dry and mud free.
