2012 NODA Criterium

April 15, 2012 was the inaugural NODA Criterium held in NODA (North Davidson) in Charlotte, NC.  Since I had raced the Dillworth Criterium the day before, I slept in and did somethings around the house before heading down to NODA.

I arrived about 45 minutes before my race, got dressed and found Mike Levine of Mills-Levine.  We warmed up for about 20 minutes.  MIke had raced the 4/5 race and was going to race the 3/4 race.  This would be our first chance to race together.  The course in NODA is super fun.  It has 6 turns and is a fast course with a long uphill drag on the back of the course.

I ended up with a pretty bad start position.  I was about 4 rows back from the front and we had 88 people in the race.  Mike was on the first row.  I knew that if I didn’t make it to the front pretty quickly, it would be tough going as the field was going to be strung out with all the turns on the course.

The race started and I started moving up.  It’s always surprising how far you can move up on the start if you can clip in quickly.  I settled in for the first lap and on the 2nd lap started moving up in the corners.   The riders were ‘checking up’ going into the corners so I just let my bike roll through.  I was picking up 6 or 7 spots  in every corner.  By lap three, I caught Mike who was riding in about 15th place.  I moved in front of Mike thinking we’d ride together for the rest of the race.

The pace was pretty hot and i was hurting going up the backstretch.  I looked back a few laps later to see if Mike was still there and didn’t see him.  A few laps later, I saw him waving to me in ‘street clothes’.  So much for racing together.   His previous race killed his legs.

The race was fast and mostly safe.  Not too much wheel crossing or guys causing problems.  With about 5 laps to go, I went to the front and brought a small break back.  It probably wasn’t a good move as I couldn’t recover.  I ended up moving to the back of what was left of the group.  I wanted to move up on the last lap, but was cooked.  I set in and finished with the main group of 16.  There was a break of 4 that got away so I finished 20th.  This race hurt, but the first race weekend of every season always hurts.

The LT100 is a 100+ mile long (more on that in a minute) bike race that starts at an altitude of 10,200 ft above sea level in downtown Leadville and travels out into the Rockies and up to 12,544 ft. There are more than 14,000 feet of total elevation gain on a course that is about 80% rough fire road/double track, 18% pavement and 2% singletrack. It has 3 huge climbs and about a dozen smaller ones. Entry is by lottery – 1500 get in and reportedly over 10,000 entered the lottery to try after last year’s movie. What makes it special is that the entire field starts at once on the out and back course – Tour de France pros and amateurs alike all race together.

  • 2012 I’on Village Criterium Charleston SC

I headed down to Charleston, SC for the 2012 I’on Village Criterium and the SC State Championship Criterium the following day.  I’ve made this trip the last 3 years with Neal Boyd and several of the Clif-Bar Giordana Brica team members.  We went down Thursday night, woke up early Friday and went Kayak Fishing with Neal, Leah and Shirlene.  Good times.

It’s always a fun trip and the course at I’on Village is a lot of fun.  I wake up, help Neal set up the course and then hang out until my race.  I did the Cat 2/3 race and it didn’t start until 1:50.  So I went back to the house and did a 20 mile ride on the Isle of Palms and Sullivan island with Shirlene, Alison and Leah.  It was a perfect warm up for my race.

Snowy Adventures at Snowshoe: Celebrating a Special Birthday on the Slopes | Ski Vlog 2023/24

Celebrating another birthday, Kim and I returned to Snowshoe Ski Resort in West Virginia. Our journey began with the memory of our first ski trip three years ago, marking my 50th birthday. This year, we faced mixed weather conditions, from disappointing rain to exhilarating snowfall. Despite the weather’s caprice, we relished a memorable birthday dinner at 10 Prime. The promise of fresh snow reinvigorated our spirits, leading us to enjoy the less crowded slopes of Silvercreek. The trip was a mix of challenging weather and joyful skiing, perfectly embodying the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of winter sports.

  • Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series

The first official race of the Charlotte Summer Series Mountain Bike Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling was at North Mecklenburg Park.  I took the Cool Breeze Van down N. Meck and set the tent up.  With this being the first race and at a relatively easy course, the numbers were impressive.  I’m betting Neal had over 150 racers.  The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team had 12 racers!  A great turn out!

I decided to race the Super Sport class for the summer series.  I considered the Expert class but don’t have a USAC expert license so I couldn’t sign up for the extra length required of the expert class.   We had 12 racers in the Super Sport class which is a great turnout for this class.

  • Race 2 – 2011 Charlotte Motor Speedway Time Trial Series

May 11th, 2011 was the 2nd race of the Charlotte Motor Speedway Time Trial Series held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.    I met Jasen at his house, loaded up his car with our time trial bikes and headed down to the Charlotte Motor Speedway.  My start time for the time trial was 7:45pm so I had plenty of time to warm up.  I put my Cervelo P3 together, pasted my number on my speedsuit and managed to get about 5 laps on the track before it was closed for the race.
