Race 3 – 2011 North Mecklenburg Cyclocross Series

Proper cyclocross weather finally came to the Carolinas for the last round of the North Meck Cyclocross Series on Tuesday night. Racers were challenged with a wet, windy course and temperatures in the high 30’s.  Afternoon rain tapered off before registration opened, but the course got slick and muddy as the night went on.  Promoter Neal Boyd setup a slightly less technical course for the conditions, and DeFeet provided some nice prizes for the final round podium finishers.

Mike Kelly (Carolina Bicycle Company) continued his winning ways in CX Masters 35+, getting off to a fast start with Bob Pugh (Fiets Mann) and John Koury close behind.  Bruce Stauffer (Cool Breeze Cyclery/Trek Bicycle Store) caught Pugh for third, but lost traction in a muddy corner on lap 2 costing him several positions. As Kelly eased away on the front, Koury picked up the pace and began to chase the leader down. Darren Fuller caught and passed Pugh as Jason Wilson was bunny-hopping the barriers on his mountain bike in fifth place.  Kelly held off the charging Koury to sweep the series with four wins, followed by Fuller, Pugh, and Wilson.

Erica Dillon of the Giordana-Clif Bar-Brica team was the only CX Women’s entry, running the 30 minute race along with CX4.

One of the largest CX4 fields of the series came out to brave the wet conditions, and two newcomers were off the front quickly. Chris Wieczorek and Tomas Kelemen opened a gap to a group of six chasers who were all battling for position through the opening laps.  Rodney Almeida (Try Sports) and Wes Walden (Live it Extreme) came out of the pack and began to bridge up to the leaders.  Kelemen began to fade as Walden got around Almeida to take up the chase.  With one lap to go, Walden passed Kelemen for second as Almeida tried to come with him.  Wieczorek soloed in to win ahead of Walden, and Kelemen held on for third with Almeida right on his wheel.

By the time the CX3/4 and CX Open races rolled off, the grassy corners were getting sloppy and the muddy spots started showing some ruts.  In CX3/4, Darren Fuller and Chris Sugar (Modry Evergreen Racing) rode together on the front for several laps with James Cole giving chase.  Fuller was leading when Sugar slipped and lost contact, but Cole could not catch Sugar for second.  Fuller rode alone for the balance of the 45 minute race and took the win over Sugar and Cole.

Teammates Robert Marion and Chase Dickens of the American Classic/Blue team had some competition this week as Jeremiah Dyer (SmartStop/MOB p/b Ridley) showed up to run CX Open. Entering his second race of the night, Bruce Stauffer held on to the trio for the first lap but eventually settled into fourth. After a few laps, a small gap started to open to Dickens in third, but he regrouped to attack Dyer while Marion covered him.  All three took turns on the front and often hit the barriers 3-wide, with Dyer and Dickens dismounting and Marion bunny-hopping over them. Dyer led the last 2 laps, but Marion attacked in sight of the finish and held on for the win.  Dickens beat Dyer back to the line for second.

Racers only have a few days to rest before the Crossroads Grand Prix cyclocross race in nearby Statesville on Sunday December 4th. Info for that event and final results for the North Meck Cyclocross Series.

    Holy Cow,  Wednesday, April 11 was the first race of the Charlotte Speedway Time Trial Series and one word describes the TT – OUCH. 

    Sarah and I left the shop around 4 to get to the race and like always, one thing led to another, we had to pick up something we forgot (wheel and timing chip), put gas in the van (as always), school traffic and managed to get to the track around 5 and lost our customary spot near registration and ended up on the backside of the garage.

  • 2012 Dillworth Criterium

    The 2012 Dillworth Criterium was my first road race of the year.   Dillworth isn’t one of my favorite courses.  I find it to be a challenging course with a long, steady climb on the front stretch, plus it’s usually the my first road race of the year so my body isn’t used to the effort required in a criterium.

    My race started at 2.  I arrived a little early to catch the end of the Cat 4/5 race to see my friend Mike Levine finish up.  After that, I rode my bike around for about 20 minutes to get the legs going.

  • 2012 NODA Criterium

    April 15, 2012 was the inaugural NODA Criterium held in NODA (North Davidson) in Charlotte, NC.  Since I had raced the Dillworth Criterium the day before, I slept in and did somethings around the house before heading down to NODA.

    I arrived about 45 minutes before my race, got dressed and found Mike Levine of Mills-Levine.  We warmed up for about 20 minutes.  MIke had raced the 4/5 race and was going to race the 3/4 race.  This would be our first chance to race together.  The course in NODA is super fun.  it has 6 turns and is a fast course with a long uphill drag on the back of the course.

  • Race 1 – 2011 North Mecklenburg Cyclocross Series

    The North Meck Cyclocross Series kicked off Tuesday night in Huntersville with great weather and a fast dry course for the opening round.  For the fourth year of this USAC sanctioned training series, promoter Neal Boyd used a similar course setup from previous years- featuring traditional barriers, wooden stair- step run-ups, and a short gravel section near one of the softball fields.  The course winds through several flat grassy areas, but takes advantage of some sidehills and off-camber sections as well.  North Meck Park has lights for the softball and soccer fields, and the course is well-lit for night racing.

  • Race 2 – 2011 Charlotte Motor Speedway Time Trial Series

    May 11th, 2011 was the 2nd race of the Charlotte Motor Speedway Time Trial Series held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.    I met Jasen at his house, loaded up his car with our time trial bikes and headed down to the Charlotte Motor Speedway.  My start time for the time trial was 7:45pm so I had plenty of time to warm up.  I put my Cervelo P3 together, pasted my number on my speedsuit and managed to get about 5 laps on the track before it was closed for the race.

  • Cackalacky Cup 2010 – The Legs Fell OFF!

    This past weekend was the Cackalacky Cup held at Lake Norman State Park. Charlotte Sports Cycling hosts on a Mountain Bike Time trail on the Itusi and Mombo trails. The first TT is on the Itusi loop with some man made obstacles (a skinny, limbo and cones). If you were to fall off the skinny, not clear the limbo or knock over a cone, you were assessed a time penalty.
