2009 Tree Shaker Mountain Bike Race Fort Mill, SC

The Tree Shaker 12 Hour Mountain Bike Race in Fort Mill, SC was my last ‘race’ of the year. Anything from here on out will be for fun.

Last year, my team of Neal Boyd, Scott Streuer and myself took overall honors in the 3 person team event. This year, TJ Wood took Neal’s spot as Neal had timing responsibilities.

The forecast was for wet weather but thankfully, we only had a few sprinkles throughout the day. TJ took the first lap, me the second and Scott took the third lap. The first lap always seems to be the hardest as you are trying to go fast, learn the course and not blow yourself up for the rest of the day. I had a great first lap and was looking forward to a good day.

The thing I noticed the most on my first lap was how humid it was. I was dripping sweat instantly. I went through a gallon of water by noon and the race started at 9AM.

The course is awesome and much more taxing than you would expect. It’s a very punchy course that requires a lot of out of the saddle sprints on the short hills and out of corners. As a result, you quads start feeling it towards the end of the race.

My excitement really started on lap 3. Our team was hanging pretty tough with another team. We would lose a couple minutes one lap and then make it up the next. I was pumped for a fast lap and really felt like I was ‘on it’. I seemed to be cruising fast, hitting everything just right. I felt like I was on my fastest lap of the day. I was about 100 yards from coming out of the woods when “where’d that banana peel” come from. The trail runs along the ‘river’ and is fast, twisting and sandy. Not real technical. Some how, I managed to lose my front wheel on maybe the fastest part of the trail. I hit the ground so fast that I didn’t have time to get my hand of the handlebar (which is a good thing). I landed on a root with my hip and slammed my forearm on the ground. The root was like an anchor and didn’t allow me to slide at all. My sunglasses fell off my face, my helmet was crooked from the impact, and I was laying on the ground trying to figure out what happened. It hurt and I remembering saying outloud…”this is NOT good, this is NOT good“. Next thought was, stand up and see if you can ride.

Luckily, I could still ride. It hurt and I knew it was going to make for a long day. I managed to finish my lap. I was really concerned about my next two laps. My arm was bleeding and bruised, it hurt to walk but I couldn’t quit. The guys were working too hard. I iced my hip, and got my arm cleaned up. I tried to eat something but it was tough as the adrenalin from the crash wore off. TJ finished his lap and it was time to go. Crazy thing was that I felt better on the bike than walking around! So, I was good to go. My times fell off but I was able to finish my laps.

The best lap of the day is always the night lap. You don’t notice the hills because you are so focused on riding into the tunnel of light from your lights. I had a blast. Stopped to give one racer a tube who had a flat, helped one racer through the river section where I crashed because his lights were going out.

TJ, Scott and I finished 2nd to a team out of Asheville (I think that’s where they were from). It was a great mountain bike race. We turned the same number of laps as last year. I’m doing OK after the crash, I have a black and blue forearm, green bruises developing on my hip, and am getting around a lot better than I thought I would.

It was a great way to finish the season. Now some time off the bike to recharge the batteries.

  • Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series

The first official race of the Charlotte Summer Series Mountain Bike Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling was at North Mecklenburg Park.  I took the Cool Breeze Van down N. Meck and set the tent up.  With this being the first race and at a relatively easy course, the numbers were impressive.  I’m betting Neal had over 150 racers.  The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team had 12 racers!  A great turn out!

I decided to race the Super Sport class for the summer series.  I considered the Expert class but don’t have a USAC expert license so I couldn’t sign up for the extra length required of the expert class.   We had 12 racers in the Super Sport class which is a great turnout for this class.

Snowy Adventures at Snowshoe: Celebrating a Special Birthday on the Slopes | Ski Vlog 2023/24

Celebrating another birthday, Kim and I returned to Snowshoe Ski Resort in West Virginia. Our journey began with the memory of our first ski trip three years ago, marking my 50th birthday. This year, we faced mixed weather conditions, from disappointing rain to exhilarating snowfall. Despite the weather’s caprice, we relished a memorable birthday dinner at 10 Prime. The promise of fresh snow reinvigorated our spirits, leading us to enjoy the less crowded slopes of Silvercreek. The trip was a mix of challenging weather and joyful skiing, perfectly embodying the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of winter sports.

  • Race 1 – 2011 North Mecklenburg Cyclocross Series

The North Meck Cyclocross Series kicked off Tuesday night in Huntersville with great weather and a fast dry course for the opening round.  For the fourth year of this USAC sanctioned training series, promoter Neal Boyd used a similar course setup from previous years- featuring traditional barriers, wooden stair- step run-ups, and a short gravel section near one of the softball fields.  The course winds through several flat grassy areas, but takes advantage of some sidehills and off-camber sections as well.  North Meck Park has lights for the softball and soccer fields, and the course is well-lit for night racing.

  • 2012 NODA Criterium

April 15, 2012 was the inaugural NODA Criterium held in NODA (North Davidson) in Charlotte, NC.  Since I had raced the Dillworth Criterium the day before, I slept in and did somethings around the house before heading down to NODA.

I arrived about 45 minutes before my race, got dressed and found Mike Levine of Mills-Levine.  We warmed up for about 20 minutes.  MIke had raced the 4/5 race and was going to race the 3/4 race.  This would be our first chance to race together.  The course in NODA is super fun.  it has 6 turns and is a fast course with a long uphill drag on the back of the course.

  • Race Across America 2007

Most of you know that I returned to San Diego to participate in the corporate Race Across America 24HR corporate challenge a week ago Friday. I had a great time and wanted to tell the story.

I arrived in SD on Friday and my brother picked me up. We went to JT’s new store (Moment Bicycles in Point Loma) because I wanted to check out JT’s store and I had forgotten my helmet and needed a new one.

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

It’s been a long season so far. I don’t know if I’m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I don’t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two things….people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I can’t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that I’ve been doing the TT.
