2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships – Day 2

Today (6/21/12) was Day 2 of our trip to the 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships.  Today’s event was the Time Trial National Championship.

Chester and I didn’t start until 3:15 so we were able to sleep in – until about 7:15…which was late for me.  We got up and had breakfast, ran an errand and then came back to the hotel room.  Our plan was to stay cool, get hydrated and then to get to the venue around 1pm to get our race numbers, check out the start and warm up.

We were fortunate that there was a road with a solid hill in it to warm up. I’ve found this kind of warm up works the best for me.  We were on the bike at 2:15 and rode until 3:55.  At 3:55 we entered ‘the pit’ to have our bike inspected by USA Cycling (Once in ‘the pit’, you can’t leave).

We started our race right on time.  We had spoken to a couple competitors beforehand and all we knew about the course was that the course was rolling.  But not knowing what was coming was going to be tricky.

Each tandem started at 30 second intervals.  We were the third tandem to start. The start went straight across a dam for almost 3/4 of a mile.  Chester and I started smoothly and quickly got up to speed.  Thankfully the course was straight enough t hat we could see the two tandems in front of us and use them as rabbits.

At the end of the dam, we hit the first roller and we stayed in sync up the hill.  My only worry was that my heart rate was already in the 170s.  I’m figuring the reason for my high heart rate was the temperature, which was in the 90s.  Chester wasn’t complaining so we kept the hammer down.

We caught the first tandem about 4 miles into the course.  I was pretty surprised with the rollers.  It didn’t seem we had any chance to recover.  After we passed the first tandem, I felt like we were gaining on the remaining tandem in front of us.  But we didn’t make any real ground until we reached the hill leading up to the turnaround point.

Chester and I made it through the turn around ok. I overestimated our turning radius of the tandem and we went through the grass before we were able to get back on the road and up to speed.  Once we were up to speed I was able to see our chasers.  We had a decent lead on the tandems that started behind us. I was hoping we could hold them all off until the finish.

We caught the tandem in front of us about a mile after the turn around while going up a hill.  Chester and I were working well together and keeping our speed up. We were going as hard as we could.

At 21:45 into our race, we were passed by the strongest tandem team.  Dave and Clark rolled by us and looked very powerful.  Chester said to ‘go get them’ but we were pretty cooked.  We started the long finish over the dam and it seemed to take forever.  I was going as hard as I could and would later learn Chester was too.  We were able to keep the winning tandem in sight at the finish.

We finished in 26:24 which was about 2.5 minutes behind the winners and 40 seconds behind second place.  Considering that this was our 4th ride together on a tandem, we are pretty stoked to finish in 3rd place!  To put this in perspective, the winning team has been riding together since 2007!

Chester and I had a great day!  We get to relax tomorrow and get ready for our 50 mile Road Race on Saturday.  Hopefully we can be just as successful!

The 2012 Dillworth Criterium was my first road race of the year.   Dillworth isn’t one of my favorite courses.  I find it to be a challenging course with a long, steady climb on the front stretch, plus it’s usually the my first road race of the year so my body isn’t used to the effort required in a criterium.

My race started at 2.  I arrived a little early to catch the end of the Cat 4/5 race to see my friend Mike Levine finish up.  After that, I rode my bike around for about 20 minutes to get the legs going.

  • 2011 Ion Smack Down – Charleston, South Carolina

I headed to Charleston, SC for a weekend of criterium racing.  I left on Friday, April 15th after going for a 25 mile ride in Mooresville.  We arrived in Charleston around 6:30 and Leah and Neal arrived shortly thereafter.   We all went to dinner and celebrated Neal’s birthdays.

I woke up early (5AM) Saturday morning to help Neal set up the crit course. We arrived at the venue around 5:45AM and started unloading his trailer to get the stage and truss setup.  Things were pretty nervous as the forecast was for major winds and rain.  We got everything setup with 15 minutes to spare.  The good news was that the rain held off and the course started drying up.

  • Race 1 – 2012 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

Sunday was the first race of the Charlotte Winter Short Track Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling.  Everyone was fearing cold weather but somehow Neal ordered a beautiful January day.

My race was at 12 but I arrived early to set up the Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store Team tent with Sarah.  My first race of the day was the Sport 40+ class.  I lined up on the 2nd row feeling confident that I could get a good start.  I was joking with my buddy Wayne when the race started.  I usually don’t have a problem getting clicked in but missed my pedal but managed to keep my momentum and eventually get clicked in before the first turn.

  • 2009 Tree Shaker Mountain Bike Race Fort Mill, SC

The Tree Shaker 12 Hour race in Fort Mill, SC was my last ‘race’ of the year. Anything from here on out will be for fun.

Last year, my team of Neal Boyd, Scott Streuer and myself took overall honors in the 3 person team event. This year, TJ Wood took Neal’s spot as Neal had timing responsibilities.

The forcast was for wet weather but thankfully, we only had a few sprinkles throughout the day. TJ took the first lap, me the second and Scott took the third lap. The first lap always seems to be the hardest as you are trying to go fast, learn the course and not blow yourself up for the rest of the day. I had a great first lap and was looking forward to a good day.

Our race was at 8 and held on the Fort Gordon Military Base. Since our race started at 8, we had an early wake up call. Chester woke up at 4:30 excited to get going. I rolled out of bed around 5:15 and started getting ready. We managed to roll out to the truck around 6:30 and were at the race venue at 7.

  • 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships – Day 1

Chester and I left the Cool Breeze Cyclery at 3PM and headed to Augusta for the 2012 Paralympic Road Nationals.  We made it to Augusta in 3 hours and checked into the Sheraton.

Chester asked me a couple months ago to pilot his tandem at Nationals but I don’t think I really understood how big a deal it is.  It started to sink in when we rolled through the hotel parking lot and there was a line of about 100 cyclists with their time trial bikes.  They were in line to get their bikes inspected by USA Cycling!
