Snowy Adventures at Snowshoe: Celebrating a Special Birthday on the Slopes | Ski Vlog 2023/24

Kim and I headed up to Snowshoe Ski resort in West Virginia to celebrate my birthday (which you probably already know.  Our first ski trip was 3 years ago when Kim called me out of the blue to go skiing.  She had know idea that it was my 50th birthday so it made for a great weekend to celebrate my 50th birthday.

Fast forward 3 years and we are back at Snowshoe celebrating another birthday.  We didnโ€™t get to ski Snowshoe much in the last two years because honestly, the snow hasnโ€™t been great and life has gotten in the way.   But we decided to head to Snowshoe and hope for some good snow.

Snowshoe has gotten a little snow this year and I was excited to see snow on the ground as I started up the mountain.  We arrived Thursday night.  I had to work Friday and we were hopeful to get out on Saturday, but Snowshoe only had a few runs open.    It RAINED all day on Sunday and I mean rained hard.  It was disappointing because it was killing all the hard work the snowmaking team had done.

The best part of Sunday โ€“ besides spending the day with Kim โ€“ was Kim treating me to dinner at 10 Prime to celebrate my birthday.   We highly recommend a dinner at 10 Prime if you get the change.  I had the NY Strip and Kim had the Sea Bass.  It was great.  Thank you so much Kim!

The weather forecast was for the rain to turn to snow and we were hoping for good things.   We woke up on Monday to cold weather and snow falling from the sky!  But in true Snowshoe fashion, the wind was howling.  We didnโ€™t get to ski on my birthday, but we did get out for a couple walks and we were excited about Tuesday, the forecast was for between 6-12 inches of snow overnight.

We woke up to gray skis and FALLING snow on Tuesday so we decided to get out hit the slopes.  We walked over to the top of Ballhooter and strapped in for the first run of the day.  We went down Heisler Way to Whistlepunk and it was full of beginners because it was essentially the only way down.  The snow wasnโ€™t horrible but the narrow slope was super crowded.   We took the new PowerMonkey lift to the top and decided to head to Silvercreek in hopes of a smaller crowd.

It was a great choice.  We had to wait about 15 minutes for Silvercreek to open at noon and we walked right in.  We had to walk a ways over the open slope and then we took off.  The snow was super fun and had 3โ€ inches of new snow.   It felt good to get back on the snow.

We enjoyed a few runs with zero lift lines.  After a while we were hungry so we stopped into the sugar shack to grab a bite to eat.  We split a bowl of chicken chili and a basket a fries.  Perfect ski food before heading back out to take advantage of the good snow.

I had to work on Wednesday.   Kim made a quick run in the morning and said the snow was pretty skied off and said we should head to SilverCreek for lunch and to see how the crowds were.  We jumped on the bus and headed to SilverCreek.

It was a bluebird day and just beautiful.  Almost like good early spring skiing.   The snow was a lot of fun and we enjoyed blasting up and down the slopes until we were tired and ready to head back to the condo.  Unfortunately, we needed to head back to Northern Virgina so I could finish out the week of work.

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

Itโ€™s been a long season so far. I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I donโ€™t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two thingsโ€ฆ.people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I canโ€™t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that Iโ€™ve been doing the TT.
