2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships – Day 1

Chester and I left the Cool Breeze Cyclery at 3PM and headed to Augusta for the 2012 Paralympic Road Nationals.  We made it to Augusta in 3 hours and checked into the Sheraton.

Chester asked me a couple months ago to pilot his tandem at Nationals but I don’t think I really understood how big a deal it is.  It started to sink in when we rolled through the hotel parking lot and there was a line of about 100 cyclists with their time trial bikes.  They were in line to get their bikes inspected by USA Cycling!

Chester checked into the hotel and we met up with some of his friends.  We went to dinner with them and I sat next to a paralympian named Jasen.  He is 28 but was injured in Iraq in 2004.  He enlisted in 2003 and a year later he was overseas.  He sustained his injuries when and IED hit his vehicle.  It was heartbreaking to hear.  He lost his right eye and has no vision in his left eye.  It really put things in perspective for me.

After dinner we had a US Cycling meeting to discuss the details.   They discussed the start of the Time Trail , the course, times, etc.  And then they spoke about the ParaOlympic selection process.  Which to be honest, I don’t really understand.  But there are 6 spots open for the men which means there is the slightest chance Chester and I could qualify for the 2012 London Paralympics!

At the meeting I met some more of Chester’s friends. It was nice to see several people search Chester out to say hello.  It’s definitely a tight group.

Chester and I race today at 3:15pm.  The course appears to be slightly rolling out and back with a small elevation gain on the way out and then fast on the way back to the finish.  It’s 8AM right now and we are heading off to breakfast.  Chester and I are both fired up to race.  I think we have a good chance to be really competitive!

Chester and I are heading down to the 2012 USA Cycling Paralympic Road Nationals next week.  We will be participating in the Time Trial and Road Race.

Hard to believe that the 2011 season has started. Even more scary is that I have no miles on my legs this year. I adopted a puppy (Ryder) in November and then the temps went south – WAY south. It’s been 10-15 degrees below normal here in Charlotte, NC. So needless to say, before Sunday’s mountain bike race, I had only two days on the road and a few cyclocross races in December for training.

  • 2012 Dillworth Criterium

The 2012 Dillworth Criterium was my first road race of the year.   Dillworth isn’t one of my favorite courses.  I find it to be a challenging course with a long, steady climb on the front stretch, plus it’s usually the my first road race of the year so my body isn’t used to the effort required in a criterium.

My race started at 2.  I arrived a little early to catch the end of the Cat 4/5 race to see my friend Mike Levine finish up.  After that, I rode my bike around for about 20 minutes to get the legs going.

  • Leadville 100 Race Report by Mark Odendahl

The LT100 is a 100+ mile long (more on that in a minute) bike race that starts at an altitude of 10,200 ft above sea level in downtown Leadville and travels out into the Rockies and up to 12,544 ft. There are more than 14,000 feet of total elevation gain on a course that is about 80% rough fire road/double track, 18% pavement and 2% singletrack. It has 3 huge climbs and about a dozen smaller ones. Entry is by lottery – 1500 get in and reportedly over 10,000 entered the lottery to try after last year’s movie. What makes it special is that the entire field starts at once on the out and back course – Tour de France pros and amateurs alike all race together.

  • Race 1 – 2011 North Mecklenburg Cyclocross Series

The North Meck Cyclocross Series kicked off Tuesday night in Huntersville with great weather and a fast dry course for the opening round.  For the fourth year of this USAC sanctioned training series, promoter Neal Boyd used a similar course setup from previous years- featuring traditional barriers, wooden stair- step run-ups, and a short gravel section near one of the softball fields.  The course winds through several flat grassy areas, but takes advantage of some sidehills and off-camber sections as well.  North Meck Park has lights for the softball and soccer fields, and the course is well-lit for night racing.

  • Race 1 – 2012 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

Sunday was the first race of the Charlotte Winter Short Track Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling.  Everyone was fearing cold weather but somehow Neal ordered a beautiful January day.

My race was at 12 but I arrived early to set up the Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store Team tent with Sarah.  My first race of the day was the Sport 40+ class.  I lined up on the 2nd row feeling confident that I could get a good start.  I was joking with my buddy Wayne when the race started.  I usually don’t have a problem getting clicked in but missed my pedal but managed to keep my momentum and eventually get clicked in before the first turn.
