Race 2 – 2011 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

This past Sunday was the second race of the Charlotte Mountain Bike Winter Series. I was hoping for a better result than I had the  previous weekend. The weather was colder but it was dry (finally) all week. I got to the course around 10 to watch Lexi (Jasen Taylor’s  little girl) while he raced. Watching them race got me a little excited to get going and the good news is that the riders were staying  dry and mud free.

I warmed up for about 10 minutes and I lined up on the front row. I don’t know why I do this because my plan is to always take it easy  for a lap or two. And I have a hard time getting myself to warm up. Maybe I should work on that.

The mountain bike race started and I followed one guy who just nailed it. I tried to stay calm and just stay close to him before we entered the woods.  I managed to get into the woods in second place and slightly recovered I the single track. Exiting the single track wasn’t so easy. I  immediately lost 3 places as I tried to find a rhythm.

The good news was that I was with Sonny and TJ, both teammates on the Giordana-Clif-Bar-Brica team. Sonny was running strong and TJ was  on his cross bike. We spent 3 or 4 laps working together with me or Sonny leading through the singletrack and TJ crushing it on the  pavement. I was working way too hard keeping up with TJ and eventually he and Sonny pulled away.

I struggled for a lap as I recovered and my legs seemed to come around. I managed to catch Sonny, who had been dropped by TJ and the guy  in 3rd place, and started running at my own pace. Unfortunately, Sonny couldn’t stay with me. I could tell that I was slowly getting  closer to TJ and the guy in 3rd place at the turn around.

But, with my lack of fitness I started struggling. The last two laps were hard. I lost distance to 2nd and 3rd place and was able to hang  on for 4th. I may have dropped a place, but I think the 5:30AM training classes at Cool Breeze are helping. Now I just need to get some  training in. Glad the real season doesn’t start until April.

There is always a lot of discussion amongst ‘us racers’ as to whether or not there is a significant advantage of riding a Time Trial/Triathlon bike in a time trial.   Most of us are aware of all the marketing around aero frames, wheels, helmets, position, etc.  You know what I’m talking about, this wheel will save you 40 seconds, an aero helmet will save you a minute…

  • Racing in North Carolina

I raced a 10 mile Time Trial on July 23rd at Lowes Speedway. I finished 2nd in the Cat 4 group with a time of 21 minutes and 24 seconds. This was also good enough for 17th overall. So I felt like my fitness was pretty good. This weekend was a big race weekend in Charlotte. There were Criteriums Thursday-Sunday around the area. There was also a Team TimeTrial on Thursday.

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

It’s been a long season so far. I don’t know if I’m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I don’t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two things….people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I can’t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that I’ve been doing the TT.

  • 2012 Brushy Mountain Training Ride 5

4/4/12    Andy and I made it up to Brushy Mountain yesterday.  It was my 5th time to Brushy this season.  It’s always fun to start the season of with a bunch of trips to Brushy to get into shape.  I set a PR on the last trip and this weeks trip was just a steady state ride, especially with a VO2 test on Friday and the 6 Hours of Warrior Creek on Saturday.

  • 2012 Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic Road National Championships – Day 1

Chester and I left the Cool Breeze Cyclery at 3PM and headed to Augusta for the 2012 Paralympic Road Nationals.  We made it to Augusta in 3 hours and checked into the Sheraton.

Chester asked me a couple months ago to pilot his tandem at Nationals but I don’t think I really understood how big a deal it is.  It started to sink in when we rolled through the hotel parking lot and there was a line of about 100 cyclists with their time trial bikes.  They were in line to get their bikes inspected by USA Cycling!

  • 2012 NODA Criterium

April 15, 2012 was the inaugural NODA Criterium held in NODA (North Davidson) in Charlotte, NC.  Since I had raced the Dillworth Criterium the day before, I slept in and did somethings around the house before heading down to NODA.

I arrived about 45 minutes before my race, got dressed and found Mike Levine of Mills-Levine.  We warmed up for about 20 minutes.  MIke had raced the 4/5 race and was going to race the 3/4 race.  This would be our first chance to race together.  The course in NODA is super fun.  it has 6 turns and is a fast course with a long uphill drag on the back of the course.
