Shootout on Anglers Ridge

Andy Good and I headed up to the ‘Shootout on Angler’s Ridge‘ on March 13th.  Andy raced in the Sport 50+ class and I raced in the Sport 40+ class.

My mountain bike race had about 25 people in the class and it was good to see some familiar faces in the lineup.  I was on the front row of our group which seemed like a good place to be until the Race Director called ‘role’. By the time my name was called, I was on the 3rd row for the start of the race.

Thankfully there was about a 1/4 mile dirt road to start the race so I was confident I could move up before we hit the singletrack.  Thankfully I was correct.  At the end of the road we made a U-turn and started a climb.  I was in about 7th or 8th when we started the climb and made it up to 5th place when we hit the singletrack.

The rider (Josh) on the front one the previous weeks race so we were content to follow his wheel.  The pace was easy and the trail was about as twisty as it could be.  Total fun. If you get a chance to get to Danville and ride, I recommend it.

We followed Josh for almost half the lap when we hit gravel hill.  It was about an 8th of a mile long and very steep.  Two guys in front of me attacked and I went with them.  The pace was significantly higher from then on. I stayed with them until we hit some lapped traffic.  I lost a little time to the racer in 2nd place.

I thought I’d be alright and catch him at the end of the first lap as we had the long dirt road to catch up.  I was almost right.  I managed to get 1st and 2nd place in sight heading back into the woods. Unfortunately, we didn’t do the climb on the second lap.  I was behind two riders going back into the woods.  It took me a while to get around them and by then, 2nd place was almost out of site.

I tried to pass a lapped rider and he just stopped in front of me and took me out.  I ended up going down and it took me a few minutes to get going again.  I did managed to see the rider in 1st place on one part of the trail that looped around.

I went as hard as I could after that and never saw 1st or 2nd again.  I ended up 3rd in my class.  I am pretty happy with the result, especially considering it was my first big (ie not local) mtn bike race in several years.

Below is my Garmin Edge 500 download.  I also uploaded the ride to Strava.com.

  • Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Winter Short Track Series

Sunday, February 5, 2012 was Race #4 of the Charlotte Winter Short Track Mountain Bike Series. It rained all day Saturday so all the racers were expecting a wet/muddy course. But once again, that wasn’t the case. The course was in great shape and lap times were consistent with the previous weeks.

I was feeling pretty good after riding Brushy Mtn. 3 times on Friday with Mike L. During my warm-up my legs felt pretty good and the temperature was perfect for racing. I even took my leg warmers off.

Snowy Adventures at Snowshoe: Celebrating a Special Birthday on the Slopes | Ski Vlog 2023/24

Celebrating another birthday, Kim and I returned to Snowshoe Ski Resort in West Virginia. Our journey began with the memory of our first ski trip three years ago, marking my 50th birthday. This year, we faced mixed weather conditions, from disappointing rain to exhilarating snowfall. Despite the weather’s caprice, we relished a memorable birthday dinner at 10 Prime. The promise of fresh snow reinvigorated our spirits, leading us to enjoy the less crowded slopes of Silvercreek. The trip was a mix of challenging weather and joyful skiing, perfectly embodying the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of winter sports.

  • 2011 South Carolina State Criterium Championships

Sunday morning started much like Saturday, early.  Neal and I left the house right at 5:30AM to get to the criterium course held in Hampton Park next to the Citadel in Charleston, SC.  We stopped, got coffee and headed down I17.  There was a full moon and it seemed like we were going to drive right up to.  One of the coolest moon sets I’ve seen.

We managed to get the Start/Finish Truss and stage set up in record time.  The SC Criterium Championship is held on a flat course with two real turns.  It’s a super fast 1 mile course.

  • Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series

The first official race of the Charlotte Summer Series Mountain Bike Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling was at North Mecklenburg Park.  I took the Cool Breeze Van down N. Meck and set the tent up.  With this being the first race and at a relatively easy course, the numbers were impressive.  I’m betting Neal had over 150 racers.  The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team had 12 racers!  A great turn out!

I decided to race the Super Sport class for the summer series.  I considered the Expert class but don’t have a USAC expert license so I couldn’t sign up for the extra length required of the expert class.   We had 12 racers in the Super Sport class which is a great turnout for this class.

  • Sea Otter Classic 2006

I attended the Sea Otter Classic this past weekend and raced the Masters 30+ Cat 5 Circuit and Road Race. If you haven’t been to Sea Otter, I recommend going at least once. Riding the Laguna Seca Racetrack is great experience. It’s a tough circuit race that climbs 300 feet per lap in about a ¼ mile with the 2nd half of the climb being much steeper than the first half. Riding the corkscrew is like being on a roller coaster ride, you feel as though you are riding straight down a mountain. A fellow competitor’s computer said we were going 47mph by the time we hit the bottom of the corkscrew turn.
