2012 Dillworth Criterium

My race started at 2.  I arrived a little early to catch the end of the Cat 4/5 race to see my friend Mike Levine finish up.  After that, I rode my bike around for about 20 minutes to get the legs going.

I’m always amazed at the intensity of the riders before a criterium race.  While waiting for the start, I was talking to a friend and there was a space in front of me for a rider to get into.  But didn’t think much of it.  Of course someone just had to have the spot like it was going to matter in a 50 minute criterium.

The race started off and was fairly uneventful until the ‘big’ turn at the bottom of the course.  It’s a hard left hand turn that is more than 90 degrees so if you aren’t up front, you really have to slam on the brakes because so few riders are willing to roll the corner, not to mention there is a manhole cover right at the apex of the corner that you have to maneuver around.  This is where the race always gets hard because if you aren’t one of the top 5 or 6 guys, it becomes a major effort to stay with the main group.  It’s almost a sprint every time you exit the corner.

So we made it about 5 minutes into the race when I almost was taken out.  Going down the backstretch at about 25 mph, a guy tried to sprint to the front in the gutter.  I thought I was done when he clipped the handlebars of the guy in front of me and he went down.  Thankfully, I didn’t panic too much and our momentum (we were doing 25mph) kept the guy crashing in front of me moving forward and I was able to get around the crashing rider without loosing too much speed.  It kills me that guys are willing to take such risks, especially so early in a race.  I mean, we only had 45 minutes to go….

After that, I pretty much rode in the top 20 or so riders for the remainder of the criterium.  I made it through the corner most of the time in pretty good shape.  But I was working hard.  After 20 minutes, I felt my calves start cramping exiting the turn and starting the climb.  About 40 minutes into the race,  I had a major cramp in my right calf.  I managed to get to the flatter portion of the climb and was able to stretch my calf enough that I could keep riding.  I kind of thought my race might be over my calf cramped so bad.  But thankfully I was able to stretch it out over the course of the next two laps and finish the race.

I never made it to the front of the race, but rode with the main group to the finish.  We started with close to 60 riders and had about half that at the end of the race.  I finished 17th and was/am happy with my finish, especially considering it was my first crit of the year and I’m not a great fan of the Dillworth course.

Here are the ‘Particulars’:

Avg. Speed:  25.1mph

Avg. Heart Rade:  164bpm

  • 2012 I’on Village Criterium Charleston SC

I headed down to Charleston, SC for the 2012 I’on Village Criterium and the SC State Championship Criterium the following day.  I’ve made this trip the last 3 years with Neal Boyd and several of the Clif-Bar Giordana Brica team members.  We went down Thursday night, woke up early Friday and went Kayak Fishing with Neal, Leah and Shirlene.  Good times.

It’s always a fun trip and the course at I’on Village is a lot of fun.  I wake up, help Neal set up the course and then hang out until my race.  I did the Cat 2/3 race and it didn’t start until 1:50.  So I went back to the house and did a 20 mile ride on the Isle of Palms and Sullivan island with Shirlene, Alison and Leah.  It was a perfect warm up for my race.

  • Race 1 – 2011 North Mecklenburg Cyclocross Series

The North Meck Cyclocross Series kicked off Tuesday night in Huntersville with great weather and a fast dry course for the opening round.  For the fourth year of this USAC sanctioned training series, promoter Neal Boyd used a similar course setup from previous years- featuring traditional barriers, wooden stair- step run-ups, and a short gravel section near one of the softball fields.  The course winds through several flat grassy areas, but takes advantage of some sidehills and off-camber sections as well.  North Meck Park has lights for the softball and soccer fields, and the course is well-lit for night racing.

  • In Shape?…Maybe Not!…

It’s been a long season so far. I don’t know if I’m in good shape or not. I participated in the Charlotte MotorSpeedway Time Trial on June 9, 2010 in the Category 3 group. I got to the track early enough to register, get a start time assigned, and then have a solid warm up. I don’t like riding a trainer so I warmed up on the small track inside the big track. I immediately noticed two things….people warming up on TT bikes not using their aero bars (which I can’t understand) and the wind. It was pretty obvious that we had a big headwind going all the way down the home stretch between turn number 4 and turn number 1. It was the most wind I had experienced in the 3 years that I’ve been doing the TT.

  • Race 2 – 2012 Charlotte Summer Mountain Bike Series

The first official race of the Charlotte Summer Series Mountain Bike Series hosted by Charlotte Sports Cycling was at North Mecklenburg Park.  I took the Cool Breeze Van down N. Meck and set the tent up.  With this being the first race and at a relatively easy course, the numbers were impressive.  I’m betting Neal had over 150 racers.  The Cool Breeze/Trek Bike Store team had 12 racers!  A great turn out!

I decided to race the Super Sport class for the summer series.  I considered the Expert class but don’t have a USAC expert license so I couldn’t sign up for the extra length required of the expert class.   We had 12 racers in the Super Sport class which is a great turnout for this class.

This was our 4th trip to Snowshoe in the 2023/24 season. We drove up in a major snowstorm and it made for an interesting drive. The snow looked great but wasn’t so good on Saturday because of the previous warm weather. Sunday was much better. We enjoyed several days at Snowshoe mountain resort. We hope you enjoy the video.
